Summer Assignment PDF
The purpose of the AP Human Geography course is to introduce students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of Earth’s surface. Students learn to employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to examine human socioeconomic organization and its environmental consequences. They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their research and applications.
Completion of the summer assignment will be an indication that you are serious about the course and are well-suited for the class. We will be covering a large amount of content before the AP examination in May. The summer assignment will help you build upon your knowledge base in preparation for the class and will allow you to demonstrate your willingness to complete advanced level work. sturdy 3-ring binder
colored pencils for mapping
14 binder dividers
exam review book (see bottom for info.)
loose leaf paper
internet access
3 x 5 index cards (500)
shoe box or storage box for index cards
pens and pencils
composition notebook
Assignment 1: Notebook
In AP Human Geography, we will examine many global and local issues, theories/models, and facts concerning the topics below. Neatly label and organize your binder with the course topics below. Bring the binder with you on the first day of class Monday, August 13, 2018.

2. Population
3. Migration
4. Folk & Popular Culture
5. Language
6. Religion
7. Ethnicity
8. Political Geography
9. Development
10. Agriculture
11. Industry
12. Services
13. Urban Patterns
14. Country Portfolio
Assignment 2: Country Portfolio
1. Label the last tab in your binder with the title: “[Country Name] Portfolio”
2. Select a nation of the world and print out information (with all fields expanded) on your chosen country from the CIA World Factbook’s Country Profile
(https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/index.html)
With all fields expanded, this will probably be at least 10 pages. Place this country profile in your notebook. (click PDF at the top of this page for more specific directions)
3. Over the summer, you will need to locate, read, and summarize 5 news articles pertaining to your chosen country that demonstrate the importance of geography to your country’s development and current status. Topics could include (but are not limited to) agriculture, natural resources, economic development, relations and disputes with neighboring countries, cultural heritage, migration and refugees, natural disasters, population issues, or civil conflict between ethnic groups.
4. For each article, write a paragraph (50-100 words) summarizing the content and explaining how it illustrates the importance of geography. The following are suggested sources for international news:

5. Place a copy of each article (1 from the month of June and 2 each from July and August for 5 total) with the proper citation information (publication, date, pages, etc….) along with your summary in your Country Portfolio tab in chronological order.
